Nurture Mum was founded by Kathy Whyte. Kathy originally trained as a nurse and midwife and more recently has completed a masters in nutritional medicine. Whilst studying nutritional medicine Kathy developed a keen interest in “developmental science”, the early origins of health and disease and how the circumstances of early life during the 1st 1000 days (conception to 2 years) lay the building blocks for a long and healthy life.
Kathy is a keen gardener and sees many common elements between nurturing a seed or flower and nurturing a baby from the time of conception. Both are dependent on good nutrition, hydration and sunlight, we can see the growing seed, how it is progressing and whether it has the right conditions. However for the growing baby during pregnancy, we depend on healthy eating guidance, blood samples, measurements and scans to monitor and nurture.
Following extensive research, Kathy found that there is often confusing and conflicting advice and support available to Mums’ during the 1st 1000 days, nutrition in pregnancy, during breastfeeding and at the time of weaning. There is so much research in this area of “developmental science”. Whilst constantly engaging with the academic world, Kathy translates the science to practical and useful information and advice during these very precious 1000 days.
